Skate World Floor Topping

Lakeland, FL - August 2011

Project Description

An integral part of the joint free floor technology required a relatively high dosage of the FORTA-FERRO® reinforcement to minimize the risk of concrete shrinkage and slab curling. By using 7.5 lbs. / cu. yd. of concrete of the 2 ¼” long fiber, Birdwell was able to accommodate the concrete’s normal tendency to shrink and crack, and allow for a joint free design over the 176 ft. x 76 ft. floor-span area. The fibers offered no negative issues with other unique aspects of the Skate World floor, such as the use of an integral sandstone concrete color, and a 3-part polishing and burnishing final floor finish. Birdwell accommodated any shrinkage-restraint issues by using a double slip-sheet system beneath the slab, along with careful attention to the reinforcement detail surrounding three internal 4” steel-pipe columns. As evidenced by the project pictures, the result was a beautiful and user friendly floor surface that will serve Skate World’s customers for years to come.
