Project Description
FORTA, in cooperation with the contractor and ready mixer, replaced specified steel with FORTA-FERRO macro synthetic fibers in the Santan Canal from Coolidge to Sacaton, AZ. The first section of the canal lining was specified with 3.0 lb/cy yd of FORTA-FERRO. In the second section, a fiber conversion was done to replace #4 @ 12” rebar with 5.0 lb/cu yd of FORTA-FERRO. Since the ready mixer and contractor were the same company, they set up their own ready-mix plant for this job and used the FORTA Big Shot fiber feeder to introduce fibers into the wet batch. Reinforcing with FORTA-FERRO has an easy application process while reducing cracking and permeability of the concrete. In addition, the fibers acted like fingers so the concrete would not collapse in the embankment. Owners were able to save money by eliminating steel reinforcements while making the project non-corrosive in the process.
