Another high-profile job in the central restaurant and shopping district of Royal Oak, MI used FORTA-FERRO macro synthetic fibers to reinforce the structure. A new medical office building replaced 8” gauge wire mesh with a fiber dosage of 4.0 lb/cu yd in the decks and a dosage of 3.0 lb/cu yd in the slab on grade. The safety conditions were improved by using fibers since workers did not have to work around tripping hazards created by wire mesh. Additionally, fibers sped up construction since they didn’t have to store or place steel reinforcements. Contractors could also pump the concrete, already reinforced with fibers, up to the different deck levels.
