Rigby’s Family Entertainment Complex

Warner Robins, GA - January 2012

Project Description

Owner Steve Rigby contracted with Bryan Birdwell of Birdwell & Associates, Lakeland, FL, to construct a smooth and seamless floor for his new family fun center’s roller skating rink. Birdwell has developed a state-of-the-art concrete floor system known as a FAST Floor System© – Flat DurAble VerSatile JoinTless – which provided the perfect surface for the this project. Unhappy by uneven surfaces, repair, and maintenance costs in previous rink experiences with wood and epoxy coated floors, Rigby turned to concrete for a better finish.  One of the critical components of the system is the use of a relatively high dosage of fiber reinforcement to control cracking, maintain a more uniform moisture and temperature gradient throughout the fresh concrete, and reduce slab shrinkage and curling. Birdwell used FORTA-FERRO®, which distributed very uniformly throughout the concrete and did not affect the high-gloss surface finish. The project resulted in a durable, highly reflective floor for the owner, as well as a world record for the Birdwell/Skene team – a 2012 Gold Plate Golden Trowel award for project’s superior flatness and levelness.
