Project Description
MnRoad consists of two road segments that are divided into over 50 test cells, each representing various combinations of roadbuilding materials and designs. MnRoad replaced some of the cells in June of 2017 and FORTA FERRO macro fiber was used in nine of them. The mainline road used 5lb, 8lb, and 11.7 lb per yard dosages at 5” and 6” thickness to see how they would compare. Aggregate Industries provided the concrete and Steven Ruby, Concrete Paving Superintendent at C.S. McCrossan said, “The FORTA FERRO® went through our paver well and we were able to get an excellent finish.” Since it was placed in 2017, periodic checks of the cells appear to be in excellent condition. History has shown these fibers to offer added toughness and durability as well as a reduction of cracking and curling. In addition, the fiber promises a viable return on owner investment due to the extended life of the pavement and savings on maintenance costs.
