International Samsunport

Samsun, Turkey - October 2010

Project Description

The port is the biggest in the Black Sea area and has been surrounded by breakwaters to protect the dock areas. The dock operations, including ship loading and unloading, operate 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.  FORTA-FERRO® (54 mm) was used as the main reinforcement for all of the construction. The site had three distinct parts: container zone, warehouse and silo area, and the concrete roads.

Container Zone: 6 containers of 88,000 lbs. (40 tons) in addition to lifting cranes with a resulting load of 29,000 psy (12 tonnes per square meter). The thickness chosen for this design was 12 in. (30 cm).

Silo and Warehouses: Grain silos and warehouse ground loads are approximately 16,920 psy (7 tons per square meter). The thickness chosen for this design was 12 in. (30 cm).

Concrete Roads: Truck and other heavy vehicle traffic. The thickness chosen for this design was 12 in. (30 cm).

The placement of concrete was made by a pavement machine which contributed to reducing overall contraction time. The main benefit of FORTA-FERRO® in Samsunport was to minimize the effects of saline water and plastic shrinkage cracks due to the strong winds. Overall, FORTA-FERRO® also increased the fatigue resistance and flexural strength of concrete slab under heavy load traffic.
