Project Description
Based on their investigation of previous successful fiber-reinforced concrete overlay projects, engineers from Winona County opted to engage a last-minute change-order for the County Road 25 project to include macro synthetic fiber reinforcement. The project involved 7 mi of 5 in thick concrete overlay on deteriorated asphalt with two-way 12 ft lanes and 7 x 6 ft sawcut panels. The decision to add fibers was based on durability and longevity calculations showing over 40% additional design life for a fiber-reinforced overlay. This offered Winona County taxpayers a valuable return on their repair investment. FORTA’s Preferred Contractor, Croell, Inc, of New Hampton, IA, reported easy fiber addition and mixing and no balling issues. The result was a near-negligible surface fiber finish using a chain-weighted drag. Croell also conducted several start-to-finish project tours which have resulted in numerous new state and county fiber-reinforced overlay projects being forecast for the next construction season.
