Project Description
The $280 million Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Hospital being built in Wexford, PA will provide the best-in-class emergency, inpatient, and surgical care. In this new four-story-high hospital,
FORTA-FERRO macro synthetic fibers were chosen to replace specified steel in the slab-on-metal-decks as well as the floor slab. The total project size was 7,000 cu yd and used a fiber dosage of 4.0 lb/cu yd. FORTA-FERRO fibers were used on this project instead of steel because the steel reinforcements would have been very costly not only in labor but also with the handling of the wire mesh. Using fibers also allowed the contractor to pour and finish the concrete quicker than if they would have had to lay reinforcements. This was the first major project that the ready mix producer had used with FORTA-FERRO fibers. They were, “pleased with the mixing and finishing of the fiber reinforced concrete and how easily it pumped.”
